CLIVE GOTT

B

orn in York  on 11th August 1958Clive was brought up in Healaugh, a small village in between York  and Leeds.  After an unspectacular educational career on September 10th 1974 joined the Army as a junior soldier in the Royal Signals based in Harrogate.  On 12th December of the same year he suffered the first of many sporting injuries he would endure in years to come.  Playing at number 8 for the college rugby (union) team Clive fractured three vertebra.  Shortly after this accident he left the army to pursue … “whatever” in ‘civy street’.

Now, 28 years and a multitude of jobs from fire-fighter to railway conductor, and weed killer to butcher, later Clive lives in Tadcaster with his beautiful wife Sara daughter Laura and Boxer dog Peeka.

In January 1986 Clive Gott was a grossly overweight fire-fighter struggling to keep his job. Just three years later, in typical style, he completed the London marathon in a little over three hours.  The following year, 1990, Clive representedGreat Britain  fire brigade in the fire-fighters world championship triathlon, finishing 11th in his race.  Over the next few years Clive completed over 80 triathlon races ranging from short sprint distances to the gruelling Ironman distance of 2.5 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and a full 26.2 mile marathon run.  His fastest time for this event was just 9 hours and 36 minutes.

After leaving the fire brigade and competitive athletics in 1992 Clive hit a boredom wall, he needed new challenges.  The first of these came in January of 1993.  When he was working as a fitness instructor at the York Barbican centre Clive was asked by the then editor of the York evening press, Nigel Pickover, to front a public fitness programme to be known as ‘spring into summer’.  The programme was a resounding success.  65 people of all ages and fitness levels completed the programme and inevitably changed their lives for the better.  Clive had discovered his unique talent for inspiring and motivating others to greater things.

After a few small successes in the field of public speaking Clive decided to make a career of helping other people achieve their goals.  He had a talent, he had a product, what he lacked however was any skill whatsoever in selling.  Clive applied for, and was offered, a job with the Dale Carnegie organisation in Leeds.  This would be his apprenticeship as far as selling was concerned.  In a short time Clive was gaining a reputation for being a powerful and inspirational force in the field of public speaking.  This ability was recognised by other organisations and in March of 1997 Clive was approached by MTR International, a training and development organisation based in Sussex, to write, sell and deliver motivational and inspirational development programmes on their behalf.  Within 18 months Clive was made a director of the company.  However the joy was short lived.  He learned that the organisation he was representing was not everything it purported to be.  The organisation he was a director of was not walking the talk.  Finally, when his integrity was challenged once too often, Clive took the decision to leave the employ of others and set up on his own.  OnJune 10th  1999 Lighthouse Training Ltd was registered with companies house and Clive Gott was a one-man band in one of the most competitive industries there is.
